How To Ensure That Duplicate Items Are Not Created In Oracle Inventory?

How to ensure that duplicate items are not created in Oracle inventory.We currently have duplicated items in the system and we are looking for a way to stop duplicate items being created in the Master item form in Oracle Inventory R12.

Your suggestions would be highly appreciated.
