Alternate Payment Template Functions for SUBSTRB

Hi ,

We want to perform substr function to a multibyte database character string (Korean language)  to restrict to 35 characters in the EDIFACT paymul template . However SUBSTRB is not working in EDIFACT

Are there any alternate ways of doing this in the template
