ORAOCI Registry variable

In former times (Oracle 7 onwards) I remember we had to define a Registry Variable in HKLM\Software\Oracle named ORAOCI and it had to be something like "oraclient7.dll" or "oraclient8.dll". What was it actually good for?

Has this variable become obsolete in Oracle 11g and 12c?

Just curious because the person who is doing our setup-procedures wants to know whether he still has to track this variable?

Last time he has set it to "OraClient11.dll".  But in environments like Instantclient I don't see this DLL anyway.
