Does upgrade of rolling two node RAC GRID in a separate home from 11.2.0.3 to 12.1 install and upgra

So, we have a GRID installed in a separate home at 11.2.0.3 for a two node RAC system. I need to upgrade GRID to 12.1. I know I can do a rolling upgrade of GRID, but does the upgrade do the install of the software and upgrade at the same time or can you install first (like any normal install) and then do the upgrade later?
