What is backcast forecast?

Dear experts,

Does any one know exactly what backcast forecast is?

I asked the same question in my Oracle SR and the answer was: Think of it as forecasting in the past. For forecasting you start today and look in the future. In backcasting you start today and 'forecast' back in time.

But, this answer confuses even more, than it was before...

Can someone share the algorithm of such backcasting?
