Why does our auto-rec job take 2.5 hrs to even though no ABR's exist?

from the client:

I spent last night for several hours after the bounce and this morning for several more recreating the period.  I deleted everything after the bounce and reran all of file loads.  Once that was done, I copied in the quarterly ABRs only. That was 226 ABRs.  Those loaded and moved from Pending to Open in a couple of minutes.  Then I went ahead and copied the rest of the period.  It was about 22k ABRs.  The copy itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes to finish.  Once that was finished, the auto rec job ran.
