RMAN channel for VMDK disk

Oracle Installed:

On RAC

Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production,  2 Nodes

PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.3.0 - Production

"CORE 11.2.0.3.0 Production"

TNS for Linux: Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production

NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production

Linux: Red Hat 64 bit



Question: Currently oracle backups are saved on disks, but I would also like to save a copy of those backups on VMDK disk. From that disk I will copy backups to a tape device. 


  1. How do I create that channel so RMAN can send a copy of backups to VMDK, while continuing backups on local disks
  2. How do I create a retention period so the backups on VMDK expire daily and new backups are saved on it.
