RMAN active duplicate and new datafile addition

We have faced this issue before and need clarification.

When we build a standby database using 'duplicate target database for standby from active database', this runs for 1-2 days.

During this period if we add a new datafile in the primary database the duplication fails.

is this something that is expected ? or do we have any option to avoid this error or issue and still add new datafile.
