Change UoM of an Item

We have had an Item that is used to record the Diesel Inventory for 3 business units.

The Unit of Measure that has been used for the last 5 years has been Gallons (GA) and there have been several Issues to Jobs, Transfer and Adjustment transactions done against this item.

Now for one of the business units, the Unit of measure has to be changed to Liters.

Is it possible to change the Unit of measure from GA to LT(Liters) for an item? If not what would be the best way to go about this.

I am assuming I would have to create a new item with the new Unit of measure and then Issue out the quantity from the old Item.
