Purpose for Child assets

What is the purpose of having child assets ? In our case each asset has about 30 child assets. Based on my analysis we are not using them at all, but I am not sure how to be 100% confident that they are not being used somewhere .

The business wants to disassociate them from the parent.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
