Can I update the default search function in a find window?

I'm trying to change the default search function on a data field, but I do not see an option to do so.

The issue is that users can be configured with multiple values for "Project Membership" but using "equals" means that I have to select the exact configuration for a user to pull them back in results, and if I search for only one of the options, it returns users who have only that single option selected. There are hundreds of thousands of possible configurations for users and several hundred shells created within a few months.

The user is able to manually change it from "equals" to "contains any", but  I'd like to reduce the amount of clicking and waiting for the users if I can.
