Not able to update Lot Control attribute in Item Master

We have a situation where user defined an item in Lot control by mistake. An Internal order was created and shipped. Now the order is Intransit. User identified the mistake only when he tried to receive it. Now the system is not allowing to update the Lot Control attribute as there exist intransit record. What is the solution in this scenario?
