Impact of closing GL periods early

Our GL periods are monthly based and run from the 1st of the month to the last day in the month. Currently the business closes a GL period 3 days after it has ended, however they are now looking to close a period 2 to 3 days before the period ends. Would this work or are there any technical or financial reasons why the business shouldn't do this?
