Paying from schedules

Is anyone using the pay from schedules feature?  We setup a holiday calendar, a work schedule and are experimenting with paying from schedules for salaried staff in conjunction with self service time entry and leave requests.  We are wrestling with whether the best approach is strictly ESS time entry or leveraging paying from schedules (which auto populates the ESS time entry so it can be tweaked before submission).
