I've always wondered why these "supporting" cast members are not backed up via RMAN.  It just seems like it would make DR so much easier for the user.  Why does the "Recovery Manager" software not pick up the capability, provide the service? 

notes 372996.1 says:

RMAN has to connect to a running instance.  If an init.ora file is used rather than an spfile, this should be restored from an OS backup or manually rebuilt -€“ it is the user€™s responsibility to ensure correct content.

Seems like these guys should get some consideration in the recovery software.
