Can *WILDCARD be used to select a certain data out of a field?

I have a need to select or omit records where the 6th character of a field is a 1 or 2. I have tried to use the *WILDCARD as described but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have a real example of where the *WILDCARD works?
