Substitute items - change orders , MRP

Hi - Is there any documentation on how to manage substitute items for parts list through the Change management process ( ECO/ECR) for BOM changes ? Also how does MRP calculate requirements on substitute items. It will be great if there are any white papers which can be provided which gives more details on these.
