Updating Workflow Notification Emails

We want to add some information to the Generic Template used for the travel authorization workflow notification.  Navigation to the templates is PeopleTools>Workflow>Notifications>Generic Template.  The specific template is 'Authorization Request Routing'.  We would like to add the DATE_FROM and DATE_TO fields.  How do we add more variables?
