Adding 2 new disks and creating mirror of them, do I need to newfs partitions on both disks

I'm adding a new disk for a separate home file system (Solaris 10 Generic_150400-24).  It will be one partition for the whole disk.  I did a newfs on the partition, although there is no data yet.

I added an identical second disk and created a mirror between them using the steps below.

Did I need to newfs the second disk or the mirror?  Did I need to newfs the first disk partition?  Did I need to put data on it before mirroring?  I do not newfs a disk when I replace a filed mirror disk so I'm not sure if I need to do both disks or just one.
