Upgrading from 10g to 12c?

We are finally upgrading our 10g environment to 12c.  I know I have to go to 11g first prior to going to 12c.  What is the best way to do this?  Do I do an 11g upgrade to my 10g environment, or do I stand up and 11g environment, and migrate content over, then configure 11g from scratch?  We do have a little bit of customization in dropdowns and metadata.  From what I have read 11g to 12c should be an in-place upgrade, can anyone confirm this is correct?
