Multiple Balancing segment values

Dear All ,

We have one Ledger and multiple legal entities .At present we have one Balancing segment value i.e company code .Going forward we would like to enable and additional balancing segment say location code as an additional segment , would it be possible to change the configuration mid way.

what could the repercussions be..
