steps how to upgrade from oracle server database 2008 r2 to oracle server database 2012 r2

what are the steps  to upgrade from oracle server database 2008 r2 to oracle server database 2012 r2 ?

The client insisted that I needed to install , create and configure 5 databases on a windows server 2008 r2 then upgrade the OS to windows  2012r2 ( with those databases already on it)  rather than  installing , creating and configuring those  5 databases directly on a server

with windows  2012r installerd already on it.

Am I able to to do whatever the client is asking me , if yes what are the steps for such a procedure ?

If not what is the right way to do this upgrade.
