Using Future Use

My finance team would to use Future Use segment for there project codes.  Now the future use segment is set up as 6 zeros but project codes are 4 digits.  I look at the gl and the source that use project codes are Manual and Payable.  I just would to know the procedure, process and impact of using Future Use from 6 digit to a 4 digit field.
