Anyone impelemtn Secondary/Temporary Assignments that override primary assignments in terms of finan

We need to implement functionality that will allow secondary/temporary assignments to override primary assign when considered approvals (financial, leave, etc). The answers we've received so far say that this isn't possible. Just wondering if anyone in the client base ever run across this requirement before and what they did.
