Entering a Sales order for A Multi-Level Configured Item

We are going to be setting up some multi-level configured items.  I see the Forklift -> Boom -> fork example in the documentation.  However, what I am not understanding is whether or not a separate line is being entered on the sales order for each item or if a single Sales Order line is being entered fro the Forklift and then Configurator is launching Configurator for the Boom Item which is then launching Configurator for the Fork.
