Order Activity Rules for Kits

We are starting to use Kits (K line type).  Normal sales orders seem fine but we needed to add a special order just for invoicing (SN order type) and we are getting order activity rules errors.  We never setup K line type nor did we setup normal SO order activity rules for K line types.  Were we supposed to?  How would K line types be defined if we did?
