Can not get field's value by val();

Hi all Siebel guru! This is my case:

ListApplet. When I try to get field's value by this code

var "desccntrl" is set, but var desc is "undefined". So I can't get desccntrl's value by .val(); function. What function I need to use instead .val() in this case?

my *PR* attached.
