Document Number in AR transactions

Hi All

I'm working with EBS R12.1.1 and have a question about the field "Document Num" in AR transactions header form.

Actually, nothing is being saved there (I read in other posts that according to the document sequence you have setup, the document number defaults with the transaction number)

Anyway, I need a field where to save an external system transaction number and this filed must be "searchable", this is, the user should easily search a transaction through this number.

My question is, can I use the document number field to save the external transaction number? Or does the system use this field for some reason I'm not in aware off?
