GoldenGate 12.2 Pump PASSTHRU|NOPASSTHRU Deprecated?

I noticed in that in 12.2 the PASSTHRU parameter is no longer included in the pump configuration, but when I ran it through checkprm and even started the pump process it worked just fine. I thought the use of PASSTHRU was a performance increase because the process wouldnt have to log into the source database and do lookups of the table definitions if we aren't doing filtering or column mapping. Has this been removed since the table metadata is added to the trail file in 12.2? I didnt see any reference to it in the release notes.
