How do I make a field sortable on search or search results page?

Good Day,

I have a user request to have a custom metadata field be sortable.

I went to Configuration Manager > Advance Search Design > selected the field hit Edit and selected the option ‘Is Sortable’.

But nothing changed on the Search or Search Results page

I read the help page and it says I need to select ‘Is optimized’ before selecting ‘Is sortable’ but that option is greyed out so I can’t select it.

How do I make this field sortable? Can I make it appear on the search results page or on the search page and make it sortable from there as I can with Release Date?
