Can I use the Task Assigned Asset Field without Oracle Fixed Assets?

We do not have Oracle FIxed Assets but would like to assign an asset number to tasks in the task setup form. I am wondering if we can use this field, and if I would have to pre-define values.  If so, please send the navigation for the form.
