rman duplicate betwwen 11g R2 and 12c release 1

Hello expert,

                     We are planning to upgrade our database from 11.2.0.4 to 12.1.0.2 and we are thinking to do that like below.

For any non-prod database (11.2.0.4) we will be using a staging server for refreshing the db from production copy.Once that is refreshed we will mount file system in actual non prod host.We will upgrade (in place) database to 12.1.0.2 and do performance testing.

My question is can we use rman duplicate between 11.2.0.4 and 12.1.0.2? If anybody has any experience kindly share.If that is possible then we can avoid down time for database upgrade.
