URL to link to File Share in CRM On Demand?!?

In Release 32 -- we had multiple weblink fields in use.  Below is the screen-print for one of the fields.  Basically we used multiple fields on custom object 2 to dynamically build a link to a file on our network file share b/c we do not want to store the document within CRM OD for audit reasons. 

When the user would click on the field -- the document would open.  However, starting sometime after release 33, when the user clicks on the link, nothing happens.  only a Java void() message in the bottom left of the screen.

We tried to change the url to put in some additional syntax 'file://' thinking maybe this was needed to allow the link to work.
