Best Practices: ASN Naming Convention

We have recently implemented iSupplier and wondering on the ASN/ ASBN nomenclature.

What are the best practices to define the ASN (Advance Shipment Number); does it needs to be dictated by the companies if yes then what possible formats could be used or no, then could it be random number from the Suppliers ?

Looking for best way to address ASN nomenclature so that it benefits the receiving folks as well as vendor or any other recommendations on how address the ASN Nomenclature.
