Can an employee number be changed in HRMS?

We have an employee who was hired in 2003, has multiple People/Assignment date-tracked entries, and has had payrolls processed.  This employee was auto-assigned employee# 666 which he is now asking to have changed as it has negative (religious) connotations associated with it.

Is there a way in EBS (12.1.3) to change an employee number once payroll has been run and there is history on that employee?  I understand the employee# may be stored in many tables in the database so a function would have to be designed to change the number everywhere in the system.  I would assume this hasn't been done.

Howdy, Stranger!
