LOCKWAIT column in v$session

Dear All

I want to know what is the purpose of LOCKWAIT and STATUS columns in V$SESSIONS? STATUS column has value either ACTIVE or INACTIVE while LOCKWAIT column has either null or a value like 0700000F76E5EA88 (this value is different for every row). What these values indicate? Do these values play any role in locking and releasing objects for DML?
