How do I split an existing asset in two or more assets?

I have an asset that corresponds physically to 4 assets. I need to retire the equivalent amount to 1 of this assets. It would be better if I could split the asset in four and, then, retire one of them.

I was thinking in spliting the assets using the "Copy Assets" page. My second option would be to retire the asset and, then, create three new assets (since one of them should be retired anyway).

What is the best approach? Is there any other way?
