Read only Tablespaces and RMAN recovery

Ok,

     We kind of took over a database and looking through their procedures, we came across something a little strange.  We have a 4 Terabyte database with about 3 terabytes of data in about 150 read only tablespaces.  The backup procedures are skipping read only tablespaces and as these tablespaces get to a specific size, they make them read only, then archive the dbf to tape and then delete the rman backup containing that tablespace (trying not to maintain a backup area of 4 terabytes I guess!)   Now in the documents it mentions in the event of the need to
