Is it possible to add a new segment to a COA?

Is it technically possible to add a new segment to a COA as a spare segment, ie it would be dormant and the only available value be a default one. We have an intergrated R12 suite with GL, AP, AR, iProc, Purchasing, HR and Payroll.
