How are folks archiving / purging historical data in ARM?

We're got some new rules!  ILM (Information Life Management) where we need to archive off, purge prior years and then be able to report off the archived version.  How are folks doing that?  We're thinking we'd need to stand up a whole new environment, much like disaster recovery.  Any thoughts or if someone as done this would appreciate it!
