Is Serial Number Length Too Short

Our users are getting assets with serial numbers longer than 20 characters.  Does anyone else have the issue?  Is there a work-around?  How difficult is it to change it to 30 characters? 

I'd request a field length change but don't know how long the field should be without being excessive.  Maybe it should just be excessively long.  IT_UD_CHAR1 is Char50.

Any thoughts?
