Is it mandatory to enable Reconciliation Reference for automatic Subledger-GL Journal line reconciliation?

The Reconciliation - Automatic Reconciliation program does not reconcile the subledger journal lines with Blank reference even when 'By Balancing Segment, Natural Account and Blank Reference' reconciliation rule is selected while submitting the request.
