Is there any workaround to applying User Defined Lot Expiration on an existing Inventory Item which

Is there any workaround to applying User Defined Lot Expiration on an existing Inventory item. Update in Master Data appears to prevent as either 1. On hand exists 2. Transactions exist 3. Lots exist. We are trying to prevent having to set up a number of new items
