Able to autoinvoice Sales Order with Shipped status

Have Ship confirm a sales order with a actual departure date set 1 day in advance. The Interface Trip Stop errored due to future date, which is expected. But when we run autoinvoice, the said SO was invoiced successfully which is not expected since it is not yet Interfaced to inventory. Is this a bug or a missed setup ?
