How does the SECTOR_SIZE get set for an ASM diskgroup?

I have a new standalone server where I have installed GRID and Oracle SW.   I also created the 2 ASM diskgroups I needed.  I then created the DB and all was good.  I didn't get any errors in the DB creation and I thought that it had started.   I put it aside and when I got back to it today I can't start the DB because it gets an error referring to SECTOR_SIZE.

I know that our disks are 4K, so I really don't know how it could have gotten 512 for the SECTOR_SIZE.

So now I have to try to recover from this and I'm not sure how to go about it.  Any suggestions?
