Dataguard and archive_log_dest_2

We have some databases setup by a consultant running max_availability.  The problem is that is

checked the log_archive_dest_2 and some of them say

valid_for=(all_logfiles,primary_role and others say (online_logfile,primary_role).

Can someone explain the difference and will both parameters work in case of a

switchover.
