Best practice for changing benefit plan years

I am looking for best practices for changing benefit plan years.  We have some that are March thru February years.  This year we are making a short year Mar thru Dec; then the new year will begin as Jan thru Dec going forward.  Can anyone help me with this?  All help appreciated.  Thanks!
