HR Assignment record lock during Payroll Process

In Oracle EBS R12, we have been trained and thru past experience that we cannot access a HR Assignment record during a payroll run process because it will create a lock and the payroll process will error out. Is there a way to bypass the record/process locking? Is there a setting where the system will alert a user (or program/process) when another user is accessing the same assignment record?
