how can you verify the difference in the running cfg and the current cfg

I know that you can look at the version differences between the current cfg version and the running cfg version, but is there a log to see what the actual differences are, rather than just a version number?

I show changes on one of our boxes but don't know what they are or who made them.

If you do a "show running-config" and compare it to "show configuration" is that the only way, to go line by line?
