Tonight we experienced some pretty excessive load on one of our production database servers. Users called in complaining of speed challenges or that they were unable to do anything. It is a mixed transactional/reporting server.

Server Current configuration:

64-bit Linux

125G RAM

32 CPU / 8 cores

Oracle configuration:

11.2.0.1.0

SGA_MAX: 56G

SGA_TARGET: 48G

PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET: 1G

SHARED_POOL_SIZE: 5G

Buffer Cache: 42G

Cursor Sharing: FORCE

Session Cached Cursors: 50

Open Cursors: 600

NOTE: The above Oracle configuration settings are a week old. Previous settings were:

SGA_MAX: 30G

SGA_TARGET: 30G

PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET: 377M

SHARED_POOL_SIZE: 5G

Buffer Cache: 24G

Howdy, Stranger!
